So what exactly is the [...]]]> If first saw this on shoehunting.com.  This photo of  Hathaway, who I already love, and now I  love her even more now that she’s wearing my favorite childhood shoes, jellies!   That’s right the PVC plastic is back for spring again- at least with Anne Hathaway.

So what exactly is the deal with Jellies?

Jellies, you know, the shoes made of PVC plastic- in various shapes and styles sometimes infused with glitter are coming back, for like the 4th time.

Here is a little history on Jellies:

Jellies were designed after WWII when there was a shortage of leather in Europe. All the Italians were freaking out and major Italian factories were fighting against each other with golf clubs from Scotland over the last few bits of leather to make their shoes and sustain their factories.

In fact, this leather shortage was getting so bad that people were walking around barefoot….

By the way, is that guy in the back wearing a sack of potatoes on his head?

Anyway, the leather shortage was a real problem so they had to find other materials to use to create shoes…

PVC Plastic! = Flexible, relatively durable, and inexpensive!

And Jellies were born. They were a hit in the 80’s, came back around in the 90’s, I remember wearing them a ton as a kid and LOVED them because of the glitter- even though they sometimes gave me blisters.

They came “in” and “out” again briefly a couple spring seasons and now they are “in ” again.

So you ask…who is doing Jellies for under $100?

Lucchesse is known for being an inconic wester bootmaker and this Spring he’ll be focusing on cowgirls with a limited edition collection called Diva.

Although the boots are made in the US., each style cowgirl boot is named after an italian woman, such as Agostina, for a 13-inch stonewashed boot, etc.  Lucchesse anticipates more styles available soon- depending on how the ladies respond to the Diva line.

Keeping the collection hot, new looks will be released every 3-4 weeks- nothing that three new lasts that were created for the program couldn’t create, according to Maria Vega, Lucchesse’s director of marketing.  The Dive line is built on a 3/4-welt construction and feature a toe box with a gentle spring while upper designs include distressed vintage western looks with colorful overlays, underlays, and scrunch effects.

Retail prices for the boots range from $300-$500 and will be sold with a distribution focus in western shops, resorts, hotels, etc.

Last but not least, promotion for the line will consist of an online contest where cowgirls can download template patters and submitt designs.  Contestants can also give their submission an edge by telling a story behind the design and giving the boot an Italian woman’s name – like the Diva line does.  All entries must be postmarked no later than March 22 and the winners will receive custom made boots along with their design story and photo of the boot on the Lucchesse newsletter, on the website and Facebook!

One of my favorite designers, Diane von Furstenberg’s (DVF), fall look is a bit more masculine that her usual style- especially for footwear. Think oxfords with some feminine touches.

As I walked through the rows and rows of hundreds upon hundreds of footwear brands that exhibited at the Feb. 2010 WSA show, I noticed something: they’re all doing pretty much the same thing. Nothing too exciting, I’ve seen it all before.

Boring!

The only thing that really caught my attention and lured me into their booth was a sign that said “Cocktails” or “Mimosas” and then I was all about it.

Ok, I will admit that some brands were making a strong effort to differentiate somewhat in terms of aesthetics.  Nevertheless, you name the segment (Dress, athletic, juniors) and everything is what it always is.

One big and happy difference from last year is the fact that 8 out of 9 Designers are making the shoes easier to walk in as stated in an article in Glamour magazine online.  You could see this at the show, and the results for comfortable shoes are obviously not sky high heels. Boo!

But I guess that’s good in a way. I’ll be more comfortable when walking right?

Yeah.  But in all honestly, what is comfortable about wearing shoes that look like these?

No offense if you own these bad boys, I’m sure they look quite hot when your wearing them right?

But seriously….

Another thing I saw was an awful lot of companies trying to do the “athletic sneaker that tones your ass” song and dance.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, update yourself.

And we all know wearing those shoes scream one thing about yourself….

Oh well.

Yes, this is true.  Apparently, there are a bunch of monkies that sit around in a room making calculations about market trends and they use that to predict consumer buying patterns and determine what shoes women like me will want to wear 6 months from now. Hmmm..

So, here is what the “experts” are saying will be the big trends for Fall 2010 here.

Now, here is my expert trend predictions:

1. Combining Elegance with Industry will be a big trend. You’ll see it in the way designers combine a classic suede high heel pump with a timberland boot style sole- like in these L.A.M.B. pumps.

Or, perhaps these Prada pumps….

2. Zippers on everything: The trend is an emphasis on zippers. You’ll see this in booties, knee high boots, sandals, whatever. It’s also in line with the industrial-style trend. Funny enough, it’s like an Industrial Revolution has hit footwear design- but it still hasn’t hit the way they do manufacturing…can we say, “lack of innovation”- hmm, I don’t think even that will cut how slow the biz is moving in comparison.

Zanotti seems to be way into the zipper thing.
